The Ravenscroft Manor Papers from Moorland Heights

The Ravenscroft family arrived at Moorland Heights in 1908 after Arthur Ravenscroft inherited the sandstone manor from his widowed aunt. Three generations lived there: Arthur and his wife Eleanor, their four children, and Arthur’s elderly father, while Eleanor directed the household. The family income came from sheep grazing, a small stone quarry, and mineral rights leased to a nearby company.

County records show regular wages, tax payments, and repairs during the first years. The isolated manor remained occupied throughout the 1910s, with servants maintaining its extensive rooms and surrounding estate.

The first warning appeared in 1922 when Ravenscroft Quarry fell behind on wages and lease payments after stone prices declined. Two poor grazing seasons followed, reducing the family’s livestock income. Arthur dismissed household staff and closed the eastern bedrooms, while repairs to the slate roof, iron balconies, and porte-cochère were postponed. After Arthur died in 1926, his sons disputed the mineral leases and inheritance. By 19
