The Fairchild Mansion Abandoned After Department Store Collapse

The Fairchild family established Lindenhurst House on Oakwood Avenue in the town of Bellmont in 1908 after Charles Fairchild built the residence using profits from his growing department store business. Charles, his wife Eleanor, their three children, and Charles’s mother lived in the two-and-a-half-story Eastlake Victorian mansion. The family income came from retail sales, clothing distribution, and commercial partnerships.

Local records described Lindenhurst House as a social centerpiece of the neighborhood, with maintained interiors, preserved woodwork, and regular repairs before changes in retail commerce weakened the family’s financial position.

The first warning sign appeared in 1929 when several clothing suppliers reported unpaid invoices from Charles Fairchild’s department store. By 1931, reduced sales and increased competition forced the business to close one section of the store and delay property repairs. The family dismissed household employees, closed the upper bedrooms, and postponed maintenance on the curved veranda, copper roofing, and decorative wood panels. The department store collapse of 1934 caused business debts, unpaid taxes, and mortgage difficulties. In 1935, Charles and Eleanor left Lindenhurst House after creditors secured the property, moving to live with relatives in another city.

Lindenhurst House was abandoned in 1936 after the department store collapse, creditor action, and accumulated debts ended the Fairchild family’s ownership. No restoration occurred, and no Fairchild descendants returned to occupy the mansion. Later records showed unsuccessful property sales because repair costs exceeded the value of the home. Furniture, business documents, and personal belongings remained inside while weather damaged the stonework, shutters, and wooden balconies. The lilac bushes overtook the garden fence and the wicker chair remained beside the porch. The Eastlake Victorian mansion remains empty on Oakwood Avenue, deteriorating without restoration or a confirmed future owner.
