The Fairchild Manor on Willow Terrace

The Fairchild Manor stood on Willow Terrace in Massachusetts, where the Fairchild family moved in 1907 after Henry Fairchild inherited the property from his uncle, a former shipping merchant. The household included Henry, his wife Margaret, their three children, and Henry’s unmarried sister who helped manage the home. The family’s income came from a coastal shipping brokerage operated by Henry, which provided enough stability to maintain the large residence through the early twentieth century.
Local records described the manor as a respected neighborhood home with occupied rooms, regular repairs, and a carefully managed household.

The Fairchild family began facing difficulties after the 1929 economic collapse reduced coastal shipping activity. In 1930, company records showed overdue payments from clients, while county tax documents listed delayed property taxes on the manor. The family closed several upper bedrooms, reduced heating throughout unused sections, and postponed repairs to the roof and wooden porch. After Henry Fairchild became ill in 1932, management of the brokerage passed to his son, who struggled with declining trade. Following Henry’s death in 1934, disagreements between heirs over debts and inheritance delayed decisions about the property. By 1935, the business had failed, and Margaret moved with her children to a smaller home nearby.

The Fairchild Manor entered foreclosure proceedings in 1936 after unpaid mortgage balances, brokerage debts, and unresolved inheritance disputes left the property financially unstable. A public auction was scheduled, but no buyer accepted the cost of repairing the aging structure during the economic recovery period. The remaining family belongings were removed slowly, though furniture, records, and household objects were left behind. No restoration occurred, and no Fairchild heir returned to occupy the manor. By the late 1940s, water damage, broken windows, and neglected structural repairs had accelerated deterioration. The Fairchild Manor remains standing on Willow Terrace, abandoned and slowly deteriorating with its ownership future unresolved.
