After Esteban Passed Away, This Coastal Flat Was Left to the Salt and Wind

This small coastal flat belonged to Esteban Ruiz for nearly twenty years.
Esteban worked as a sail repair tailor, restoring canvas sails and stitching marine coverings for small fishing crews and harbor workshops.
The flat remained simple:
dining room, compact kitchen, bedroom, and a narrow canvas room where Esteban measured fabric and repaired torn sailcloth by hand.

The Sail Hook Passage

Several details still remain inside:

  • folded sailcloth stacked near shelves
  • heavy stitching needles resting inside tins
  • marine thread spools arranged by size
  • harbor invoices clipped together
  • salt-worn jackets hanging beside hooks
  • measuring tape rolls stored near drawers
  • unfinished seam panels preserved beneath the passage
Esteban lived alone after his daughter emigrated and his marriage ended many years earlier.
The canvas room became his routine and refuge.
Neighbors often heard fabric shears cutting late into the evening while harbor winds moved through open windows.

During Esteban’s later years, fiberglass vessels and factory-produced marine covers steadily reduced the demand for traditional sail repair throughout the harbor.
    Work became increasingly irregular.
Still, he continued repairing older equipment for longtime crews and retired fishermen.
One winter brought repeated storms and severe coastal humidity.
After months of worsening respiratory disease linked to years of fabric dust and damp workshop conditions, Esteban passed away at home during the storm season.
His daughter returned for the funeral but remained abroad and could not keep the property.
    The flat remained closed.
    Most belongings stayed untouched.

Today the flat still reflects Esteban’s working life.
    The sailcloth remains folded.
The jackets still hang beside the wall.
And beneath the sail hook passage, Esteban’s final unfinished repair panel remains exactly where he left it.
