The Whitmore House on Cedar Hill Lane

The Whitmore House stood on Cedar Hill Lane in New Jersey, where the Whitmore family arrived in 1908 after Thomas Whitmore purchased the residence while expanding his successful pharmaceutical supply business. The household included Thomas, his wife Margaret, their three children, and Thomas’s widowed sister who lived with the family for many years. Their income came from regional medical supply contracts, allowing them to maintain the mansion, hire occasional domestic help, and preserve the property through the early decades of the century.

Local records noted a busy family residence with occupied rooms, regular repairs, and a carefully managed household.

The Whitmore family’s decline began after the 1929 economic downturn reduced demand for medical supply distribution. In 1930, company records showed unpaid vendor accounts, and county documents listed delayed property tax payments. The family closed several upstairs bedrooms, stopped repainting exterior trim, and reduced maintenance on the porch and garden areas. After Thomas Whitmore suffered a serious illness in 1932, his business responsibilities passed to his sons, who disagreed over debts and future plans. Following Thomas’s death in 1934, the company lost important contracts and eventually closed. Margaret left Cedar Hill Lane in 1935 with two children and moved to a smaller rented property nearby.

The Whitmore House entered foreclosure proceedings in 1936 after unpaid mortgage obligations, business debts, and unresolved family financial matters prevented recovery of the estate. An auction was organized, but buyers were discouraged by the cost of repairs and the declining condition of the property. Family members removed personal belongings gradually, leaving furniture, documents, and household items behind. No restoration occurred, and no Whitmore heir returned to live in the mansion. By the late 1940s, damaged roofing, broken windows, and water intrusion had caused serious deterioration. The Whitmore House remains abandoned on Cedar Hill Lane, standing empty with its ownership history unresolved.
