The Langford House Beside Willowmere

The Langford family established their house beside Willowmere River in 1894 after Thomas Langford purchased the Gothic Revival property following his success as a riverboat equipment supplier. Three generations lived there, including Thomas, his wife Clara, their children, and later grandchildren who assisted with the family business. Their income came from boat repairs, river transport supplies, and contracts with nearby farming communities.

Local records describe the residence as a distinctive riverside home with active bedrooms, a private office, and regular upkeep. The curved facade, turret, and decorative stonework remained carefully maintained during the family’s strongest years.

The first warning sign appeared in 1927 when Langford River Supply lost several contracts after commercial transportation shifted toward larger regional companies. During the economic downturn of the early 1930s, the family reduced costs by dismissing household help and closing the upper turret rooms. Repairs to the terracotta roof tiles, stone tracery, and wooden fence were postponed as debts increased. After Thomas died in 1932, disagreements among heirs delayed decisions about selling the property. By 1934, unpaid business loans and overdue taxes forced Clara and the remaining family members to leave Willowmere.

The Langford House was abandoned in 1935 after foreclosure followed years of declining river commerce, unpaid debts, and unresolved inheritance matters. No restoration occurred, and no Langford descendants returned after leaving the riverside meadow. Historical records documented ownership complications and continued deterioration of the vacant residence. The interior rooms remained closed, with household papers and personal belongings left behind. Over the decades, moisture damage, structural wear, and neglect affected the stone walls and roof. The Gothic Revival house remains empty beside Willowmere River, deteriorating without restoration or confirmed future ownership.
