Inner Courtyard of the Mansard House
A wide angled urban courtyard view of an abandoned Victorian Second Empire townhouse, its three-and-a-half-story structure arranged with strict symmetry around a private rectangular court. The mansard roof is sharply defined, clad in alternating patterned slate tiles that create a subtle rhythmic texture across its steep slope. Evenly spaced dormer windows project from the roofline, their forms reinforcing the disciplined geometry of the façade. The exterior walls are built from smooth pale sandstone, their calm tone contrasted by deep cobalt enamel window frames, bright emerald-green cast iron balcony railings, and a continuous band of glazed amber terracotta beneath the cornice, all evenly illuminated under a bright overcast sky.
The courtyard itself feels enclosed and deliberate, designed as an inward-facing domestic world rather than an extension of the street.
Worn stone paving forms a rectangular ground plane that carries soft irregularities from long use. At its center, a circular fountain sits inlaid with turquoise and lapis mosaic, its still water reflecting the pale geometry of the surrounding architecture. Narrow iron-framed planters trace the perimeter edges, filled with bright red geraniums, white lilies, and soft violet asters that spill gently over their borders, softening the rigid lines of stone.
A covered archway opens toward the street, its passage partially shadowed but structurally intact, suggesting continuity between public and private space. Above, tall windows look down into the courtyard, their interiors obscured by faint sheer curtains that hang quietly behind the glass. The entire composition feels suspended in a calm architectural order, where daily life once revolved around this sheltered inner space, shaped by light, enclosure, and repetition.
