The Delacroix Villa: The Eclipsed Genius of Celluloid Empire


The Delacroix Villa was constructed in 1901 above a coastal promontory for Étienne Delacroix (1868–1912), a pioneering cinematograph operator and producer who financed early moving-picture exhibitions across Parisian salons and Mediterranean resorts. His fortune derived from exclusive exhibition rights and touring film programs sold to aristocratic patrons seeking private screenings of experimental “moving light” spectacles.
Delacroix’s household included his wife Marguerite and his younger brother Henri, who managed distribution contracts and film procurement from Paris laboratories.

The villa functioned as both residence and private studio, where experimental reels were edited, cataloged, and projected for visiting investors beneath draped blackout curtains.

The turning point came in 1909 when a nitrate fire erupted during a private screening rehearsal, destroying an entire season of unreleased films and severely damaging the villa’s archive wing. Insurance coverage was later voided due to improper chemical storage declarations. Simultaneously, a distribution dispute with Parisian exhibitors led to accusations of unauthorized duplication, collapsing Delacroix’s exhibition network across France and Italy.
Creditors withdrew funding as rival studios absorbed his contracts. Recovered film reels were seized as collateral, many later declared unstable and destroyed by authorities. Correspondence from theaters ceased entirely, leaving the villa’s screening schedule permanently unfinished.

By 1912, Étienne Delacroix was declared financially insolvent after final liquidation of his exhibition rights. He died shortly thereafter in obscurity, his name removed from active film registries. The villa was left sealed during legal disputes over surviving reels, which were never inventoried in full.

The Delacroix Villa still overlooks the sea, abandoned and unresolved, its images never completed, its light forever unprojected.
