After Toma Passed Away, This Isolated House Stayed Closed Above the Valley

This isolated house belonged to Toma Vasilev for nearly thirty-six years.
Toma worked as a cuckoo clock weight caster, shaping metal weights and balancing components used by independent clock makers and repair shops.
The house remained simple:
sitting room, compact kitchen, bedroom, and a narrow casting room where Toma melted metal and balanced clock parts by hand.

The Pendulum Shelf Crossing

Several details still remain inside:

  • unfinished clock weights stacked carefully
  • casting molds resting beside trays
  • repair invoices tied with string
  • soot-marked aprons hanging near hooks
  • balance charts stored inside drawers
  • winding keys resting near shelves
  • unfinished castings preserved beneath the crossing
Toma had lived alone since his wife passed away many years earlier.
The casting room shaped his livelihood and daily rhythm.
Neighbors often remembered hearing clocks chiming softly from the workshop throughout the day.

During Toma’s later years, the decline of mechanical clock repair and the disappearance of independent horology workshops steadily reduced demand for handmade components.
    Orders became increasingly scarce.
Still, he continued supplying older craftsmen and preserving traditional balancing techniques.
One prolonged migration wave emptied much of the surrounding valley, closing shops and leaving many villages economically fragile.
Already struggling with loneliness and worsening neurological illness, Toma withdrew further from public life.
He passed away quietly at home during early winter.
His relatives attended the funeral but had settled in distant cities and never reopened the property.
    The house remained closed.
    Most belongings stayed untouched.

Today the house still reflects Toma’s familiar routine.
The winding keys remain near the shelves.
The balance charts still rest inside the drawers.
And beneath the pendulum shelf crossing, Toma’s final unfinished clock weight remains exactly where he left it.
